Alicia Silverstone Is Anything but 'Clueless' When It Comes to Staying Healthy While Traveling

Traveling without an arsenal of wellness products? As if.

Eating healthy on vacation may be wishful thinking for some, but for actress Alicia Silverstone, it's a lifestyle.

The movie star and mom, known for her iconic role of Cher Horowitz in 1995's "Clueless," told Travel + Leisure recently how her venture into veganism at age 21 — way before Impossible Burgers were a thing — has taken the spotlight in her life and career as she's the co-founder of myKind Organics, a supplement brand by Garden of Life.

In the latest addition to the line of supplements which ranges from Vitamin C Organic Spray to Turmeric Inflammatory Response Gummies, Silverstone added Elderberry & Sleep Immune Syrup as well as Cough & Mucus Immune Syrup, for children and adults, which she says is not only perfect for this time of year but also a good remedy for any post-travel ailments. (The development of the syrups was in the works before COVID-19.)

"If you get a cough, this is going to do everything that you want when you have a cough while also supporting your immune system with echinacea, elderberry, zinc, and Vitamin C, " she said of the Cough & Mucus Immune Syrup. "It's using centuries of traditional medicine that has been validated by modern science and I think it's pretty great."

Silverstone, who travels constantly for work — an upcoming project will take her to Canada in February — keeps a whole kit of health remedies on hand, and told T+L she'll be adding the new myKind products to her arsenal.

"I travel constantly, I just got back from a trip for work and now I'm going to go away [again]," she said. "I will be bringing for sure, my Vitamin C spray, my B12 spray, my collagen booster, my Sleep Well pills, I'll bring the Elderberry Sleep [Syrup] just in case," she said, mentioning that she'll be working long hours in cold weather.

To top it off, the actress also brings a variety of vitamin gummies, Ashwagandha, Japanese Umeboshi pickled plums, and her own miso to make broth.

"I bring pretty much everything, and I do it all the time," she said. "If I'm traveling for just a few days, I just pack them in a bag, but I usually bring my full kit because I use them all and I share them with other people."

And when she's not relying on her own collection of resources when on the go, she does her research for where she can find some vegan eats or reaches out to her Twitter following for a healthy restaurant recommendation. She also recommends anyone looking for vegan or vegetarian restaurant options to check out the search engine Happy Cow.

But years ago, when finding a vegan-friendly restaurant wasn't a tweet away, the author recalled traveling around the world and being pleasantly surprised at the vegan options available.

"I think 15 years ago when I was in Lithuania doing a movie, I thought there would be no vegan food," she recalled. "I got there and many restaurants that were fancy had a vegan or vegetarian section [on their menu], and it would have like eight items and I would say, 'Wow! We need to do that in America!"

Fast forward to now, and the actress recounted seeing a major advertisement for plant-based protein company Beyond Meat at the last Lakers basketball game she went to. "I was like, 'What! This is amazing!' A product like that being sold to the masses makes me so happy, that's where the change is happening and it's wonderful," she said.

And even though her world of animal activism and plant-based living is evolving, her other world, film and television, will always be rooted in her cult-favorite film, "Clueless" which marked its 25 year anniversary over the summer.

"I think it's so lovely when I meet people and little girls on the street that get excited about meeting me," she said. "I think that's so cool because that means their parents showed them [the movie], and I'll say, 'How do know about my movie?' Because they weren't around when they came out. I think it's pretty cool that it's lasted so long and people enjoy it."
