No crowds will be allowed at Gobbler’s Knob on Groundhog Day 2021 due to COVID-19, The Groundhog Club announced Wednesday in a video.
“Yes we’re going to have Phil, and the handlers in the inner circle, and we’re going to pull Phil out for his prognostication on Groundhog Day,” Groundhog Club President Jeff Lundy said in the video. “But, due to circumstances we’re all aware of, unfortunately, we’ll have no in-person viewing and no guests on our grounds.”
Instead, a variety of online celebrations are in the works, including a livestream of Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction.
As of November, the club said it is unlikely that they can logistically figure out a safe way to hold in-person activities. If that changes, the club will update the public with that information.
Information about virtual events will be listed on www.groundhog.org.
“The guests who come to Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney each February from around the world are a key component to making Groundhog Day so special,” Lundy said in a statement. “We look forward to the day when we can welcome back all our guests and faithful followers, hopefully in February of 2022.”
